Katrina trained as a cardiac technologist, and is also an accredited cardiac sonographer (echocardiography). Her qualifications include: BAppSci (Human Physiology), MSc (Hons), COPSCT (Cardiac), and NAPExAM (Pacing).
Katrina's areas of interest are the clinical implementation of pacemaker technology and Holter monitor analysis (24 - 48 hour recording of the electrocardiogram or ECG). Holter monitor analysis ensures that the normal and abnormal heart rhythms are correctly detected and interpreted, the patient's activities and symptoms are correlated to the recording, and that the findings are summarised in a report for the cardiologist.
Katrina has provided a Holter monitor analysis service to the Auckland Heart Group for the last 15 years, working in the evenings and at weekends, while employed fulltime at Middlemore Hospital. She has recently left the public hospital environment and is pursuing a career in medical statistics, working towards a PhD.
