Experience and expertise you can trust

backgroundThe AUCKLAND HEART GROUP (AHG) has centred its activities at 94 Mountain Road since its inception in 1997, offering both outpatient and inpatient services.

Outpatient Services

Our Outpatient services are offered from seven locations throughout the greater Auckland region and mainly involve consultations and treadmill testing. AHG consultants travel to these peripheral clinics which are geographically spread for ease of access for patients. Echocardiography is currently available at our Epsom, Glenfield and Botany sites.

AHG runs a cardiac imaging centre (Ultravision) which is located within the Mercy Hospital. The services provided include a comprehensive range of cardiac and vascular ultrasound, including renal and carotid ultrasounds and intra-operative transoesophageal echocardiograms as support for Mercy Hospital surgeons.

Inpatient services

Our Inpatient services are centred at the Mercy Hospital. These include day stay procedures in the Mercy Angiography Unit: angiography, angioplasty, coronary stenting and pacemaker implantation. The Coronary Care Unit (CCU) admits haemodynamically stable patients with unstable angina, myocardial infarction, heart failure and cardiac arrhythmias, as well as assisting with patients recuperating from angioplasty and cardiac surgery.

The Mercy Angiography Unit was established in 1990 and is the largest private angiography unit in the country. It has two angiography suites which provides for flexibility in scheduling. The Mercy Angiography Unit works closely with the Auckland Heart Group and other referring cardiologists to provide a comprehensive diagnostic and interventional cardiology service, with a 24 hour on call service. It has an internationally acclaimed research programme.

The Mercy Coronary Care Unit (CCU) was established in 1999 and is an integral part of the comprehensive service offered to cardiac patients and GPs, and is an important backup to anaesthetists and surgeons at Mercy Hospital. The full spectrum of cardiac conditions are treated and the CCU beds are used for the patients admitted by AHG cardiologists.

Affiliated Provider to Southern Cross Health Society

The Auckland Heart Group was the first specialist group to become an Affiliated Provider to Southern Cross Health Society, NZ's largest private healthcare insurer. Through an Affiliated Provider Agreement (APA) the delivery of services has been enhanced with Southern Cross Health Society funding a wide range of services including CCU admissions and drug eluting stents for patients undergoing percutaneous coronary interventions (PCIs). Ultimately the Affiliated Provider Agreement has provided an efficient, timely claims process with pre-procedure approvals confirmed via electronic linkage to Southern Cross Health Society. This obviates the need for a large number of patients receiving multiple bills, or in fact, being involved in the claims process at all.

The proactive approach taken by AHG cardiologists and their ability to work collegially within a group structure, has enabled the organisation to define new ways of service delivery. Our wide network of referrals and the comprehensive services we provide are strengthened by the ethos of working as a co-operative group of providers. We believe our group structure, representing all sub-specialties, makes us more effective in our provision of comprehensive cardiac care.
