Pre-Visit Information


Your cardiologist has arranged for you to have your angiographic procedure at the Mercy Angiography Unit (MAU).

Please report to the MERCYASCOT HOSPITAL - ADMISSIONS DESK - Ground Floor ¨C Main Building - 98 Mountain Road, Epsom, Ph: 623 5700.

You will be met by a nurse and accompanied to the CARDIAC INVESTIGATIONS UNIT (CIU) where you will be for the duration of your stay. CIU is an open plan ward especially designed to maintain a high level of safety and observation of patients. The direct telephone number for CIU is +64 9 623 5752 for use on the day of the procedure

Please have nothing to eat for two hours before your admission time. You may continue to drink clear fluids i.e. water, weak black tea (not fruit juice, milk or coffee) until the time of your admission

Please take your routine medications with water. If your procedure is 11 a.m. or earlier omit any diuretics (water tablets) e.g.

  • Frusemide
  • Moduretic
  • Spironolactone (Aldactone)
  • Bendrofluazide (Neo-naclex)
  • Amiloride
  • Cyclopenthiazide (Navidrex)

If you are a diabetic or have any allergies, please inform us at the time of booking. For diabetics, your medication regime needs to be discussed with your cardiologist. If you take aspirin/cartia it is important that you continue to take it. Please inform us if you take Warfarin, as this medicine usually needs to be stopped for a few days before the test.

Please bring all your medicines with you along with any blood test results, recent chest X-Rays or ECGs.

A friend or family member may accompany you to the CIU. If you would like to, you are welcome to bring your favourite music CD as we can play this for you during your procedure.

Duration of stay and driving

Someone must stay with you overnight after an angiogram procedure. You are advised not to travel out of Auckland on the day of the procedure. If you require accommodation near the hospital, the staff in the Mercy Angiography Unit will be able to assist you with this. Angioplasty patients will often be required to stay in hospital overnight.

You will need to be driven home and should not drive for the remainder of that day. The Land Transport Safety Authority (LTSA) recommends that you do not drive for 48 hours after uncomplicated angioplasty.

Prior to your discharge the ward staff will give you advice about resuming your normal daily activities.
