Assoc Prof Malcolm Legget

Malcolm Legget trained in cardiology at Green Lane Hospital and at the University of Washington, Seattle. He is a consultant cardiologist at The Heart Group and Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Auckland. He was a consultant at Green Lane and Auckland City Hospitals from 1995 to 2019. Malcolm has been involved in a number of innovations and advances in cardiology in New Zealand including stress echocardiography, preoperative transesophageal echocardiography, CT coronary angiography and transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). Malcolm completed the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 2008 on the subject of 3-dimensional echocardiography and is currently involved in research into ischaemic and valvular heart disease, and cardiovascular genomics. He is a co-principal investigator of the Multi-Ethnic New Zealand study of Acute Coronary Syndromes (MENZACS) which is examining environmental and genetic causes of heart attacks in a large cohort of New Zealanders.

Malcolm is a keen cyclist and was a co-organiser of the Great Ride for Heart in 2010, riding the length of New Zealand to fundraise for the Heart Foundation Chair in Heart Health that has since been established at the University of Auckland, as a hub for cardiology research.

Malcolm’s philosophy is to provide a holistic approach to cardiovascular care based on good evidence, prevention, access to excellent sub-specialty expertise and a patient-focussed approach.

Malcolm consults at Intra (formerly Mercy Angiography) in addition to The Heart Group at the Central Auckland and North Auckland Clinics.
